Teresa Benitez-Thompson was born in Ventura, California and is the mother of three. She currently serves as the Majority Floor Leader and was first elected February 7, 2011 to represent District 27.
At the age of 17, Assemblywoman Benitez-Thompson founded N.E.W. Focus (Nevada Empowered Women’s Project) a non-profit to further the rights of women and children in poverty). Later on, she was crowned Miss Nevada 2002 and placed third runner-up at the Miss America 2003 pageant.
She attended the University of Nevada, Reno for her undergraduate degree and got a Masters of Social Work at the University of Michigan. Her community service includes Advisory Board Member at Citicare, Former Board Member at Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation, Teen Mentor at the Alliance of Latinas in Teen Action and Solidarity, former Board Member at Women Work!, and Member at Our Savior Lutheran Church.
